Just a quick note: I wrote this last night. If I did things correctly, this should post between noon and 12:30, while I’m teaching. I’m testing out timed posting, so that I can space out my posts.
Riley and Kate have been interested in watching me play World of Warcraft. Riley, especially, seems to have an intuitive grasp of basic game elements, while Kate likes to watch me explore. Last night, I made a deal with them: bath, homework, do the dishes, no whining, and I would teach them to fly and move in the game. It worked perfectly. I started wondering (given that I’m a teacher) whether WoW could be used for other purposes, such as education. Look what I found:

I’ve been thinking about creating a “Gamer’s Club” at the high school. But, being me, I want it to have standards, to be for people who are really committed to, not only gaming, but to letting me use gaming to help their education. This gives me incentive to continue that work. For the moment, though, I’m thinking about my girls: there are definite math and writing problems to be developed from this, not to mention logic and problem solving.
I’ll keep you updated. All two of you.
